Join us at Parliament House for the screening of Lock The Gate's groundbreaking documentary 'Undermining Australia:Coal v's Communities'.
Alex Greenwich, MP for Sydney and Wendy Bowman OAM from the coal ravaged town of Camberwell will introduce the 30 minute film, which lays bare the heart-wrenching impacts that coal mining is having on Australian communities.
Whole villages are being wiped off the map by open-cut coal mines, families are suffering horrendous health issues, and local farming industries are being annihilated. The ICAC has revealed that coal corruption is rife and the system is broken.
But in the face of this, we are witnessing one of the biggest social movements in our country’s history – a time when ordinary people become heroes.
Wendy Bowman received an Order of Australia Medal for her service to the community of the Upper Hunter, specifically in her 18 year crusade to protect farming land from mining. Wendy has witnessed first hand the damage done to water resources by open cut coal mining. She refuses to abandon the farm she and her family have worked for generations despite ongoing pressure from mining company Yancoal.
All MPs have been invited their attendance or otherwise will be communicated to our supporters in their respective constituencies. There will also be a post screening panel discussion with Mark Ogge, Researcher and Public Engagement Officer with the The Australia Institute.
